Seven Tips To Help  You Choose Your Dissertation Topic

As an undergraduate or postgraduate student, your dissertation has many credit points compared to other courses you are offering. You would not want to take it with levity but give in your best to have a good grade in it.

The topic you choose can either affect your result negatively or positively. Therefore, you have to be careful when selecting your topic. This can be quite challenging, but choosing your topic will be much easier with the tips discussed below.

  1. Choose a topic that interests you: without passion and motivation, the dissertation will be difficult for you to write. Since you have to complete the dissertation in weeks or months, you should choose a topic of interest – a subject that inspires you to dig deep into the research. Furthermore, I recommend that you choose a topic that will broaden your knowledge in your business area. This will give you an edge in the future.
  2. Choose a unique topic: a unique dissertation topic should be chosen to enable you to do your research and come to a reasonable conclusion of the study. You can make something new out of existing investigations or develop a unique idea that has not been too researched.
  3. Don’t be too vague:  ensure you are not too vague – every sentence you write must contribute to the research construction. Likewise, your arguments must be well structured. Don’t choose an idea that is too broad or too narrow so that you can draw a brief and clear conclusion while meeting the dissertation writing requirements.
  4. Don’t be too narrow: just as I mentioned in the above point, your idea must not be too narrow. Your instructor may have given you a required word count, ensure you meet this requirement even when he or she encourages you to be pithy. When you choose a too narrow topic, you will find it hard to meet the word count requirement and you won’t be able to draw a well–rounded conclusion.
  5. Research: to be sure you have the right topic, research about it. Visit academic libraries to ensure there are enough relevant resources relating to your chosen topic that you can source information from. If there are limited resources, you may get stuck and find it hard to continue your dissertation writing.
  6. Be objective: do not be carried away by the ecstasy of a topic that you forget to analyze the topic from an outsider’s viewpoint to ensure you are not holding on to the weak areas. Decide what your goals are and set out to achieve them from the start.
  7. Ask your instructor for advice: Before and when writing your dissertation, you should ask your instructor for guidance. Do not deny yourself the guide you can get from him or her. Do not hesitate to approach him or her when you have questions or need clarity about anything.
